The really big advantages of this unit over its predecessor are:
1) Better battery compartment; easy to open and load.
2) Decent locking system. The series one screw lock was rather irritating. The II model locks and unlocks easily from the camera, and the mount and contacts have been improved
3) Better water sealing
4) A regular flash sync port. (I prefer to fire remote flashes with a wireless transmitter not the canon infra-red ST-E2, although it is possible to plug a sync directly to your flash without adapters. You could even go old school and use a camera to flash cord, for this reason alone its worth upgrading.)
With new products being made, we now also have the Radio Popper PX kit available.
